Today I want to answer one of the most common questions, what do I wear in labour?!
And as with many questions about birth, there’s no one right answer. In particular with induction, many people assume their only option is a hospital gown, but that’s not generally the case.
The main points:
💛 Comfy – the main point, feeling comfortable is the top of the list!
💛 Washable
💛 You can move around easily
💛 Allows for skin to skin
💛 Loose enough to allow for IV / blood pressure cuff, examination etc.
Hospital Issue Gown
As much as I just said many people assume it’s the only option and that you have choices, it may be your preferred option. Hospital gowns are easy to get on and off, they’re lightweight which is great if you’re too hot, and you can change into a clean one whenever you need.
Buy your own Gown / Birth Wrap
This is more common in the US than the UK, but it’s becoming more popular for people here to get them too. They have similar advantages to hospital gowns, but they’re your own, in a pattern and fabric you choose.
Your Own Clothes
Wearing your own clothes in labour can help you feel more in control and at home, which is a good thing.
In the early stages of induction you may be waiting for things to get going, you may be popping down to the hospital café for a cuppa, going for a walk outside or even going home (check with your local hospital for options), so wearing your own clothes that are comfy may be perfect.
If you’re able to use the pool during your induction you may wish to pack a bikini, although you don’t have to wear one!
When you’re in labour, something comfy and that washes easily, a big t-shirt , a comfy nightie etc. is perfect. Do think about after baby is born too and how easy skin to skin will be with what you’re wearing.
Do I need to wear anything at all?
You absolutely don’t! It’s your birth and you should be as comfortable as possible! I started with a wrap dress for the first few hours and ended up with just a bra. Do what feels good to you.
Other thoughts…
Taking a dressing gown with you can be really helpful, especially if you’re there for a while waiting for things to get going, for the same reason taking a change of comfy clothes can be helpful.
It’s good to think though your options and pack some options in your bag, but it’s hard to know what will feel good before the time and also things can change during labour too.
If you have any questions pop them in the comments.
