Reflexology – Natural Induction of Labour

I’ve heard many people say that reflexology helped them go into labour, there seems to be plenty of anecdotal evidence around, but no proper clinical trials.

I’m personally still a big fan and always recommend you give it a go if it sounds appealing (and not just because I’m a reflexologist!), I think it’s a great preparation for all types of birth, because I am a big believer in the power of relaxation!

But what is reflexology and how can it help you, and where can you find a reflexologist?

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a treatment usually on the feet, and sometimes the hands. The idea is that there is a map of the body on each foot and that by applying particular movements and pressure to the feet using the hands, you can encourage the body to rebalance that area.

How can it help me during pregnancy, especially at the end of my pregnancy?

Reflexology may be beneficial in 3 main ways:

  • Encouraging the body to rebalance, the concept behind reflexology is that you can encourage rebalancing by stimulating the related reflex, people report improvement in pelvic girdle pain and nausea among other pregnancy related discomforts
  • At the end of pregnancy a maternity trained reflexologist will also stimulate acupressure points in the foot and ankle area, which may help stimulate labour (although there’s no real evidence for this)
  • Finally (and perhaps most importantly) the treatment is usually very deeply relaxing, which I think is hugely beneficial at any stage of pregnancy, but nearing the end of pregnancy you’re less likely to go into labour when you’re stressed.
  • Plus, as a bonus, most people report having a great night’s sleep following a treatment, which is often something sacred towards the end of pregnancy!

How do I find a reflexologist?

In most countries reflexology is not regulated, which means that anyone can call themselves a reflexologist. In the UK we have voluntary regulation through the Association of Reflexologists, those listed on their site have met a specific requirement of training.

It’s a good idea to ask for recommendations locally and also please check your reflexologist has a maternity specific qualification.

Have you tried reflexology?

Even my wee boy realises that reflexology can be beneficial, unfortunately I don’t get treated very often!
